About Us
Who We Are:
Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Berlin is a community-driven organization dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Urhobo people, a major ethnic group in Nigeria. As part of the global Urhobo Progress Union, the Berlin chapter serves as a gathering point for Urhobos living in Berlin and surrounding areas, fostering unity, promoting cultural values, and contributing to the well-being of our people both at home and in the diaspora.
What We Do:
- Cultural Celebrations: We organize events such as Urhobo Cultural Day, where members come together to celebrate traditional music, dance, and cuisine, fostering pride in our heritage.
- Community Support: We provide a platform for members to connect, support one another, and offer assistance in times of need, ensuring that every member feels valued and included.
- Charitable Activities: UPU Berlin engages in various charitable initiatives, including scholarships for Urhobo students and financial assistance for developmental projects back home in Nigeria.
- Educational Programs: Through seminars and workshops, we promote the education of our youth in both Urhobo culture and broader skills that can contribute to their personal and professional growth.
Our mission is to uphold the traditions and values of the Urhobo people while building a strong, supportive community for Urhobo indigenes in Berlin. We strive to:
- Promote Cultural Identity: Organize cultural events and educational initiatives that celebrate and pass down Urhobo traditions, language, and customs.
- Foster Unity: Create a sense of belonging and unity among Urhobos in Berlin, encouraging collaboration and mutual support.
- Support Community Development: Engage in charitable and educational projects that benefit the Urhobo homeland in Nigeria, while also supporting the well-being of our members in Berlin.
To be a vibrant and impactful organization that bridges the gap between Urhobo people in the diaspora and our roots in Nigeria, empowering our community through cultural preservation, education, and advocacy.
The Urhobo Progress Union, founded in 1931, earlier called Urhobo Historical Society but became Urhobo Progress Union in 1946. The Berlin, Germany chapter began in the late 90‘s and was incorporated in 2001 continuing the legacy of promoting Urhobo culture and unity in Germany and Europe. Today, UPU Berlin has grown into a thriving community that regularly hosts cultural events, educational seminars and other social gatherings geared towards bringing the Urhobo people together, celebrating our shared heritage as well as integrating them into the German and European societies.
UPU Berlin is governed by a team of dedicated leaders who are passionate about serving the community and advancing the objectives of the union. Our leadership is committed to transparency, inclusiveness, and ensuring that every member has a voice in the decision-making process.
